Scalar Info

The Scalar come originally from South America and live in the middle of the Amazon and tributaries to Peru and  east Ecuador. Scalars are not easy to breed, because they can best find each other as a juvenile. I had bought 5 scalars and it became obvious early on two couples out. I had until they were sexually mature, a lot of work with them. But it gave me a lot of fun, because I find it simply brilliant.

Water levels and temperatures: The water temperature is best around 26-28 degrees. This is also the most appropriate temperature for breed of most tropical fish. The pH value should be the best at 6.5, I found this out after several attempts because the fish there have felt most comfortable. The water should be soft (about 5 ° DGH).

Other conditions: Scalar are open breeders and prefer to spawn on hard plant leaves. These plants before they leg egg will be cleaned. Around 100 or 400 eggs will be legged. The scalar guards and protects the eggs very strong. During this time, the Scalar scares other fish not to came too close to their eggs. After eclosing the scalar babies hang with their head on the plant till the yolk bag is eaten. A water change of 1/5 of the aquarium tank every day help very much to get better results by eclosing. Unfortunately, many of these eggs don´t survive and from the rest only about 20 young scalar live healthy.
